Pollard





Matt Pollard is a Legal Adviser in the ICRC’s Legal Division.

His focus as a Thematic Legal Adviser is on starvation and food security in situations of conflict, private military and security companies, and torture and other ill-treatment. He is also part of the Unit to Update the Commentaries on the 1949 Geneva Conventions and their 1977 Additional Protocols.

Prior to joining the ICRC, Matt held senior legal roles in several non-governmental organizations (the International Commission of Jurists, Amnesty International, and the Association for the Prevention of Torture).

He had previously practised law in a private law firm in Canada.

He has degrees in law and in political science, from the University of Victoria, Canada, and an LLM and PhD in international law from the University of Essex, United Kingdom. Among his publications, he is the co-author of the third edition of The Treatment of Prisoners under International Law (OUP, 2009) with Sir Nigel Rodley.
