Kristalina Georgieva is the European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response (ECHO). Before joining the European Commission in February 2010, she has held various positions at the World Bank including as the World Bank Director in charge of environmental strategy and the World Bank Director for Russia. She last served as the Vice-President and Corporate Secretary of the World Bank Group. She has obtained an M. A. in Political Economy and Sociology and a PhD in Economic Science from the University of National and World Economy in Sofia, Bulgaria. She has extensive academic experience as an Associate Professor at the University of National and World Economy. She has more than 100 publications on environmental and economic policy topics, including a textbook on microeconomics.
