Wolfram Schaffar joined the Department of Development Studies, University of Vienna in November 2010 as professor for political science. Since 2002, he has been working in the field of Southeast Asian studies, political science and development studies at the University of Bonn, the University of Hildesheim (Germany) and the National Language Research Institute in Tokyo (Japan). In 2008 he taught as guest lecturer at the master programme ‘International Development Studies’ at Chulalongkorn University (Bangkok). In his research he focuses on social movements, constitutionalism, democratization, and state theory in the Global South, as well as on social policy and the welfare state, with the regional focus on Southeast and East Asia.
